Lewis Hamilton’s last season with Mercedes will be handled differently, according to former Formula One racer Martin Brundle.
Given how they collaborate with the seven-time World Champion, Mercedes finds themselves in an awkward situation with Lewis Hamilton’s announcement that he will be switching to Ferrari in 2025 before the 2024 season.
A motorist of this caliber rarely makes such an announcement so soon, but Hamilton is no ordinary racer. The 103-time race winner is the best racer in Formula One history according to statistics, and he will definitely help Ferrari next season.
There have been concerns regarding Hamilton’s motivation for 2024 and whether he won’t push himself to the utmost given that he is soon to transfer to Maranello. The Silver Arrows will be mindful of Ferrari’s formidable rivalry with Mercedes.
Despite the fact that 2024 will mark Hamilton’s 12th season with the German automaker, his bond with Mercedes-Benz actually began when he was just 13 years old, making their partnership unique.
Brundle is convinced that the 39-year-old will give it his best until the final lap of the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix at the end of the season and that his motivation shouldn’t be questioned in light of this and his personal qualities.
Hamilton is willing to give “everything”
“I have no doubt he will give it absolutely everything until the last lap of the last race in Abu Dhabi for Mercedes-Benz, to be wearing those overalls holding that steering wheel, representing 1,500 people,” Brundle said on the Sky F1 podcast.
“If everybody’s smart, and I think they are all very smart people, they’ve had such a wonderful relationship together, Hamilton, Mercedes-Benz, Toto and the team. I think they’ll see it as a farewell tour. That’s how I think they should and will treat it. And then wishing farewell and hope that he loses in a Ferrari.”
There will come a time, regardless of Mercedes’s handling of their relationship with Hamilton this year, when the veteran will not be included in discussions regarding car developments in order to limit the amount of information he can bring to Ferrari.
“I think you’ve got this transition point where Lewis will stop being invited to meetings, and will not understand what’s going on with the development of the car and in the simulator,” added Brundle. “The team consciously and subconsciously, will favour George [Russell]. They’ve got to.”
