Christian Horner, the principal of Red Bull Team, expressed his opinion on whether Lewis Hamilton’s move to Ferrari in 2025 will benefit or negatively impact his team.
Team Principal Christian Horner was questioned twice by the media, including RacingNews365, regarding the impact of Lewis Hamilton’s transfer to Ferrari for the Milton Keynes-based company during Red Bull’s RB20 debut.
After agreeing to a multi-year contract, Hamilton will leave Mercedes at the end of 2024 to make an incredible move to Ferrari, where he will partner Charles Leclerc for no fewer than two seasons.
His association with Mercedes-Benz, which he began when he was 13 years old, will come to an end with his move to Maranello.
Having won 82 races and six Drivers’ Championships with the team, Hamilton’s collaboration with the German manufacturer, the seven-time World Champion, is the most successful in Formula One history.
Horner did not respond to the issue of whether the enticing Ferrari/Hamilton relationship could lead to a Red Bull employee exodus.
But he acknowledged that it was “hard to say” whether it would help Red Bull and Max Verstappen.
Horner believes Hamilton’s move to Ferrari is a good thing for the highest level of racing, even with the consequences for Red Bull. He finds it unfortunate that it won’t happen until 2025.
“The timing of the news is quite unusual and it will have surprised a lot of people, including perhaps his current employer,” Horner said.
“But Lewis never shied away from bold choices. He previously switched from McLaren to Mercedes, a team not very highly regarded at the time, but it turned out to be the right choice.
“It is clear to me that he has seen something at Ferrari, that makes him think he is better off there than where he is now. I think it’s great for Formula 1 to see Ferrari and Hamilton joining forces. It’s just a shame that we have to wait until 2025.”
