If your teammate happens to be Max Verstappen, then what then? You are only ever as good as your teammate. With his current form, is it possible to defeat the Dutchman?
Max Verstappen’s ability to be matched in the same squad is dubious, according to former AlphaTauri Team Principal Franz Tost.
In 2023, Verstappen won his third consecutive World Championship by outscoring teammate Sergio Perez by more than twice as many points.
In addition to his 19 triumphs, Perez only achieved two, but the Dutchman collected 12 more pole positions driving the RB19.
Verstappen was trained by Tost for a season and a half at sister team Toro Rosso prior to joining Red Bull.
Regarding the possibility of a driver challenging Verstappen in the same car, the former Team Principal expressed doubts.
Tost told F1 Insider, “Max will win many more races and titles if he continues to have a good car.”
“He’s still not at his limit and will get even better. No driver who is or will be his teammate will ever progress beyond the role of number two driver.”
Tost thinks Verstappen was able to show off his innate skill the first time he went behind the wheel, which helped him gain momentum while still a youngster.
“Not a champion, but a natural talent. It’s about the skills of a pilot and his relationship to speed. With Michael, you never had the feeling that he was overwhelmed even on his first lap in a Formula 1 car.
“It was the same with his brother Ralf and with Max Verstappen. When he drove a Formula 1 car for the first time in Suzuka at the age of 17, he got along immediately, despite the much higher speed. He also had no problems with braking, despite the enormous centrifugal forces of up to 6g.”
