Lewis Hamilton expected a better scores result in the Saudi Arabian Grand Prix, but his race was stopped by a late pit stop.
When a Virtual Safety Car was used – and the pit lane was locked – during Sunday’s Saudi Arabian Grand Prix, Lewis Hamilton said he was “gutted.”
Hamilton had recovered from 15th on the grid to sixth, just behind Mercedes driver George Russell, following his shocking Q1 retirement, in what was developing into a superb recovery effort from the seven-time World Champion.
Hamilton’s race was ruined, though, after McLaren’s Daniel Ricciardo and Alpine’s Fernando Alonso limped to a halt at the pit entry, signalling a VSC.
While all of his opponents had indeed pitted at least once, with some benefiting from VSC and complete Safety Car periods, Hamilton had yet to put on new tyres and missed out when the pit lane was temporarily shut down.
The first half of Hamilton’s promising career takes a turn for the worst
Hamilton lost a few positions after pitting under green conditions on Lap 40 of 50, but was able to recover a point by finishing 10th.
“I struggled at the beginning with the tyre temperatures and then it started getting a little better,” Hamilton remarked after the race to Sky Sports F1.
“I started to gain on the guys up ahead. I think they were on the Medium tyres and they started to drop off. It was a really good stint and I was pushing. I think I was doing pretty much the same times as George, who had new Hards.
“I was feeling good at that point and then it all hit the fan [when] those cars stopped.
“It’s gutting, but I got one point at least. We’ll work hard and at least we both got points for the team.”
