In order to survive collisions as Honda MotoGP riders in 2023, Marc Marquez thinks the upcoming ex-Suzuki team of Alex Rins and Joan Mir must learn how to accept failure.
Honda will make changes to its lineup for both its factory team and satellite team, LCR, with 2020 reigning champion Mir replacing Marquez at the Repsol-backed factory team and Rins taking Alex Marquez’s spot at LCR after Suzuki’s decision to leave the MotoGP.
Honda had a difficult 2022 year, placing final in the constructors’ championship and recording its second unsuccessful season in three years.
Marquez predicted that Rins and Mir would both be competitive on the RC213V, but both drivers needed to emerge at HCR with “a great deal of confidence” and “luck.”
“You can’t expect them not to be strong, and then they are strong and you get caught off guard,” Marquez said when asked about how Mir and Rins will manage on the Honda, which they will ride for the first time in Tuesday’s first 2023 pre-season test in Valencia.
“There are two great riders coming in: one who is winning races and the other who is a world champion. It won’t be because of the riders. But Honda is a different bike. At the moment, all those who have gone through it have suffered.
“The Honda is a bike where if you want to find the limit you have to crash; and that’s where confidence and luck have to help you.
“You need a lot of confidence so that crashes don’t take it away, and luck so that you don’t get injured.
“That’s a realistic message, I’m not making anything up. Look at the stats.”
In the 12 grand prix weekends he participated in in 2022, Marquez wrecked 18 times, compared to 21 crashes for each of this season’s Alex Marquez and retiring Pol Espargaro.
Marc Marquez reveals he will test a new chassis and an upgraded engine specification at the one-day test on Tuesday in Valencia, but he doesn’t want it to be the last version he will race next year.
