Lewis Hamilton has hinted that he will renew his contract when his one with Mercedes expires at the end of 2023, and George Russell expects that will be the case.

George Russell said he is thrilled about the possibility of working with Lewis Hamilton at Mercedes for a number of more years.

Russell joined the Silver Arrows for 2022 after spending three seasons developing his skills at Williams. Russell has so far succeeded, leading seven-time World Champion Hamilton by 231 points to 216 with two races remaining.

Despite the fact that Hamilton’s deal with Mercedes is planned to expire at the end of 2023, the British racer hinted during the United States Grand Prix weekend that he would be willing to sign a multi-year extension. Hamilton had also recently responded favourably to Toto Wolff’s recommendation that Hamilton might become the first Formula One driver to compete in 400 Grands Prix.

Russell expressed his preference for Hamilton to continue working for Mercedes.

“It’s really exciting to have that potential of Lewis staying on for a number of years to come,” Russell told media, including RacingNews365.com.

“I think he has proven that he’s definitely not lifted his foot off the throttle pedal, and he’s definitely [in] the last few races performing probably better than ever.”

Russell wants to get Mercedes back and win

Russell commended the bond between the two Britons and expressed his desire to continue learning from Hamilton, who is statistically the most accomplished racer in F1 history, while they work to get Mercedes back on the winners’ podium.

“It’s really exciting for me to have the opportunity to be his teammate, to go directly head-to-head with him and grow on this journey that we’re on together, because it really does feel like a journey that the two of us are on, along with the rest of the team, in trying to bring Mercedes back to winning ways,” Russell explained.

“So I think we’ve got a really, really great, transparent relationship and it would be great to be teammates for a number of years to come.”

The Silver Arrows would not have gone a full season without a Grand Prix victory since 2012 if Mercedes failed to win either of the final two races of 2022.
