William Sawalich, a rising star in the Late Model, recently reached a multi-year contract with Joe Gibbs Racing to become the newest Toyota development racer.
In 2023, Sawalich, 16, will race the JGR No. 18 Toyota in the ARCA Menards Series. Phoenix Raceway will host his debut race on March 10.
The Eden Prairie, Minnesota native began competing when he was nine years old and had accomplishment in quarter midgets and Legends cars. He presently takes part in the TA2 racing series, Pro and Super Late Model, Late Model Stock, and other competitions.
He won six CARS Tour Pro Late Model Series races this season, three late model stock races, two Southern Super Series races, two ARCA/CRA races, and two more pro late model races. He also finished third in the Winchester 400 and second in the Redbud 400 at Anderson (Ind.).
“I am thankful for the opportunity with Joe Gibbs Racing and Toyota and am humbled to be in the presence of a great leader like Coach (Joe) Gibbs,” Sawalich said. “I know that he has put together a great team and the results show with the drivers that have come before me.
“My goal is to learn from their expertise, work hard and represent JGR well. I think together, we are capable of great things in the coming years.”
For the 2023 AMS season, Starkey will support the Toyota development driver’s No. 18 and use their SoundGear product range.
William has demonstrated amazing ability to improve as a top driver in motorsport, according to Steve DeSouza, executive vice president of JGR’s Xfinity Series and driver development. “We take a lot of pride in our development program with Toyota at Joe Gibbs Racing,” he said.
“He has already shown the desire and dedication it takes to be successful at his young age and we’re excited to watch his progress through ARCA and ultimately NASCAR ranks.”
