After winning the Sprint race on Saturday, Valtteri Bottas will start the Brazilian Grand Prix on pole position on Sunday. The Mercedes driver believes that starting on Soft tyres was a good decision in the end.
Valtteri Bottas admits that starting the Sprint Qualifying race on Soft tyres at Interlagos was a risk, but he was delighted to see the bold choice pay off in the end.
Mercedes driver Bottas got off to a strong start, passing Red Bull opponent Max Verstappen into Turn 1, a crucial overtake.
Despite coming close at times, Verstappen was unable to find a way past over the remainder of the 24-lap race.
Bottas stated that getting off the line was crucial in securing pole position for the Sao Paulo Grand Prix on Sunday.
“I think the start was the key thing for me,” commented Bottas after the Sprint race.
“We gambled a little bit with the Soft tyre. We knew that it would be a benefit for the start and it worked. Then it was all about trying to survive until the end.”
“Verstappen struggled to follow”
Despite the fact that things were a little tricky near the finish of the race, Bottas was pleased to win.
Bottas added: “It was quite tricky at the end, but Max struggled to follow in some of the corners. I’m glad it worked out perfectly!”
For winning the Sprint, Bottas received three points, while Verstappen received two and third-placed Ferrari driver Carlos Sainz received one.
