Max Verstappen of Red Bull stated that his car lacked the speed to keep Lewis Hamilton in Brazil.
After being beaten by Mercedes’ Lewis Hamilton in Brazil, Red Bull’s Max Verstappen has vowed to win the next three races of the 2021 Formula One World Championship.
Verstappen, who had led for the majority of the race, was unable to prevent Hamilton from passing him on the straight between Turns 3 and 4, and thus lost the lead with 15 laps remained.
Verstappen conceded there was little he could do to change the outcome after his points advantage over Hamilton was reduced from 21 to 14.
“We tried everything we could today, of course,” Verstappen said after the race.
“I think it was a good battle but, at the end, we just missed a little bit of pace, but we gave it [our] all today and it was a lot of fun.”
“It was damage limitation”
In the build-up to Hamilton’s winning effort, Verstappen had a tense battle with the Mercedes driver, including one controversial incident at Turn 4 when both raced wide over the escape area.
However, because the stewards decided not to investigate the incident, Verstappen believed that second place was all about limiting the championship’s damage.
“We still have a good points lead,” he went on to comment.
“Also, today was a bit of damage limitation on a weekend where it was a bit difficult for us, but I’m confident that, in the coming races, we will bounce back.”
