Lewis Hamilton of Mercedes won the Brazilian Grand Prix ahead of Red Bull’s Max Verstappen, who started 10th on the grid.
Lewis Hamilton of Mercedes has won the Brazilian Grand Prix, surging to the front from 10th on the grid to record his 101st career victory and cut the gap on Max Verstappen in the Drivers’ Championship to seven points.
Red Bull had a fantastic start as Max Verstappen forced his way past pole-sitter Valtteri Bottas at Turn 2, followed by Sergio Perez to make it a 1-2 for the team.
Hamilton passed the Ferrari duo of Carlos Sainz and Charles Leclerc in a blink, with Bottas giving up third place to allow Hamilton to follow down in two leading Red Bulls.
Due to debris on the track from a collision involving AlphaTauri’s Yuki Tsunoda and Aston Martin’s Lance Stroll, the field was once again closed up, allowing Hamilton to attack Perez right away.
Perez tried his best to hold off Hamilton, but the Mercedes’ prodigious straight-line speed proved unstoppable. Hamilton passed Perez into Turn 1 and the Mexican fought back to retake second place, but the next time around, Hamilton was through and on his way to catch Verstappen.
Mercedes’ strong undercut helped Hamilton shorten the gap and go within DRS range, but he was never able to close the gap on the Dutch driver during the second stint. To avoid another undercut from Hamilton, Verstappen pulled the trigger early on the second stop, but the Mercedes came alive during the last stint.
As the race neared its conclusion, Hamilton challenged Verstappen into Turn 1, with the Red Bull driver remaining strong along the ensuing straight and driving the Mercedes wide through Turn 4. To Mercedes’ consternation, a brief look from the stewards ruled that no further investigation was required, but Hamilton regrouped and forced the similar defensive move from Verstappen into Turn 1 shortly after.
Verstappen was unable to hold off the Mercedes into Turn 4 this time, and Hamilton took the lead. He then sprinted away to finish more than 10 seconds ahead of Verstappen, with Bottas coming in third.
As a result of the triumph, Hamilton has a seven-point lead over Verstappen, with Perez in fourth place earning the fastest lap point after a late pit stop from Red Bull.
In fifth place, Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc was the best of the rest, finishing 50 seconds behind the winner and two seconds ahead of teammate Carlos Sainz.
In a reversal of last weekend’s race, Ferrari defeated AlphaTauri, with Pierre Gasly finishing seventh behind them and Esteban Ocon eighth for Alpine. Fernando Alonso, Ocon’s teammate, finished ninth, with McLaren’s Lando Norris finishing tenth and taking the last points position.
There were just two retirements from the race. Stroll, following his clash with Tsunoda, shed more debris and was pulled into the pits to retire, while McLaren’s Daniel Ricciardo was called into the garage following a mid-race power unit issue.
