Due to ongoing concussion symptoms, Kurt Busch will skip Sunday’s NASCAR Cup Series race at Pocono Raceway.
Busch, 43, was seriously injured in a crash during the last round of qualifying on Saturday, but NASCAR determined that he was not fit to race after a checkup on Sunday morning.
The statement from NASCAR is as follows:
“This morning, Kurt Busch met with doctors in the infield care center for further evaluation following his accident during yesterday’s qualifying session. Following the evaluation, Kurt Busch has not been cleared to race in today’s NASCAR Cup Series event at Pocono Raceway.”
Ty Gibbs, a potential Xfinity Series champion, will take over Busch’s seat in 23XI Racing’s No. 45 Toyota.
The 19-year-old Gibbs will compete in his debut Cup Series race after placing second in the track’s Xfinity race on Saturday.
Busch has already achieved success this year and has earned a spot in the Cup Series playoffs. He was given permission to skip the race due to a medical condition.
On social sites, Busch wrote the following statement:
“NASCAR has done a great job of putting the drivers’ health before competition and I respect the decision they have made. I’m still having concussion-like symptoms from yesterday’s impact in qualifying.
“The tests demonstrate I am still recovering. I will continue to follow the medical team’s recommendations and appreciate everyone’s support. Thanks to 23XI and their efforts, let’s get back on track at Indy!”
Owing to a driver change, Gibbs will begin at the back of the field.
