Chase Elliott tried his best to keep his emotions about the outcome of the race on Sunday at Watkins Glen (New York) International to himself.

On a resumption with five of the 90 laps left, Elliott emerged to be on his way to claiming his 5th triumph of the 2022 NASCAR Cup Series season until his Hendrick Motorsports teammate Kyle Larson bumped him out of the groove.

Following the contact, Elliott reverted to fifth, while Larson took up the lead and won the race. Elliott made a comeback and finished fourth.

Elliott’s responses to the topic in an interview given right after the race were both curt and vague.

“Just a huge congratulations to Kyle and everybody on the No. 5 team. Congratulations to everybody at Hendrick Motorsports for getting another win,” Elliott said.

When questioned if he would speak with Larson again, Elliott replied, “Congratulations. He did a great job. Seriously, they deserve it. Looking forward to going to (Daytona) next week and trying to get one for our team.

Elliott was greeted at his car on pit road by team owner Rick Hendrick and HMS CEO Jeff Gordon first. With Elliott using hand gestures to communicate with them, the three seemed to be having a serious discussion.

Elliott responded when asked about the topic of the conversation, “Just congratulated him. Like I said, always good to see HMS win. The boss deserves all the wins, all the great things that go on with this company. Proud of that. Looking forward to next week.”

Elliott had a good day overall as he won the 2022 regular season title and the 15 playoff points that go along with it.

It was probably difficult to watch a third victory at The Glen in six career starts go by after leading a race-high 29 laps and benefiting from a good two-pit stop strategy.

Nevertheless, Elliott, who won the 2020 season championship, earned his first regular season championship, and he understood the significance of the achievement for his prospects of winning the season series.

“It’s 15 (playoff points) right? It’s a big deal,” he said. “It gets us to more than we’ve ever had (entering the playoffs). We would love to keep adding to it, obviously.

“I had an opportunity to add to that today, but didn’t, so we’ll go to Daytona and try to add to it there.”
