A collision at the inner loop on Sunday at Watkins Glen interrupted Kimi Raikkonen’s day.
After qualifying 27th in the race on Sunday, the previous F1 World Champion quickly moved into the top-20.
He was following a plan that would put him inside the top 10 at the beginning of the second stage as the race transitioned from wet to dry weather. He managed to hold onto the top ten, finishing as high as seventh before his subsequent green-flag pit stop.
But halfway into the resumption, everything went horribly wrong. Austin Dillon was sent spinning after Ross Chastain collided with him in the inner loop. Loris Hezemans and Raikkonen came into touch during the stack-up, sending Raikkonen careening nose-first into the wall to the left of the racetrack.
“I thought I had a good line there but everybody seemed to come (to) the left. Unfortunately, I had no time to react,” explained Raikkonen after being released from the infield-care center.
“The first impact, somebody hit the tire or the wheel directly and the (steering) wheel spun. There is something wrong with the wrist, but that’s how it goes.”
He loved his time behind the wheel of a Cup Series car despite the early exit, calling it “good fun.”
He continued, “I felt more confidence all the time and had some good battles and yeah, it’s a shame. The car felt like it had a lot of speed in there but that’s how it goes sometimes.”
Raikkonen chose not to say no when questioned if he would attempt NASCAR one more. “We’ll see. I don’t know.”
He ran 44 of the 90 laps before giving up on the race, placing him 37th overall.
