Alex Bowman has recently missed a race this season due to concussion-like symptoms, making him the 2nd NASCAR Cup Series racer to experience this.
Bowman will miss Sunday’s playoff race at Talladega (Ala.) Superspeedway, according to an announcement from Hendrick Motorsports, “after experiencing concussion-like symptoms following an accident in the Sept. 25 event at Texas Motor Speedway.”
Bowman, 29, was examined by doctors in Charlotte, North Carolina, according to an announcement from HMS.
Bowman is the second racer this season to miss out on participation due to a concussion, following Kurt Busch. Busch hasn’t raced since being hurt in a collision on July 23 at Pocono Raceway while qualifying.
On Lap 97 of 334 in the race on Sunday at Texas, Bowman spun and struck the wall exiting Turn 4. He came back to the track, ended the race in 29th place, and made modifications to his No. 48 Chevrolet on pit road.
Leading Xfinity Series championship contender Noah Gragson will replace Bowman in this weekend’s race, according to Hendrick. Gragson won the Xfinity Series race at the circuit in April and has now won four consecutive races, tying the record for the whole series.
Gragson was initially planned to race the No. 62 for Beard Motorsports this weekend, but now Justin Allgaier will do so.
Bowman was in risk of being eliminated going into this weekend’s race because he had the lowest point total among the 12 playoff racers still in contention. Only the race on the Charlotte Roval the following weekend remained in the second round after Talladega.
