Raphael Varane completes a medical with Manchester United ahead of a possible transfer

Raphael Varane’s Manchester United medical has been finished, and just the finer points of his contract conditions have to be worked out before an official announcement is made.

The France international arrived at Carrington on Tuesday for the first half of his fitness tests before returning on Wednesday to complete the second half.

Before United can announce his arrival, it is anticipated that minor details on the paperwork will need to be ironed out. This is expected to happen before the weekend, but not on Wednesday.

It has been 16 days since a fee was agreed with Real Madrid for Varane – an initial £35 million plus add-ons — but the complexities of a major transfer plus the need for a period of quarantine have added time to proceedings.

Because he hasn’t yet practiced with his new teammates, sources believe the 28-year-old will start the Premier League opener against Leeds on Saturday as a replacement. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer will assess his match fitness first.

Varane’s international teammate Corentin Tolisso, on the other hand, is not a priority for United. The 27-year-old midfielder, who has fallen out of favor at Bayern Munich, has been linked with a move to Old Trafford, but he is not on United’s agenda.
