Racer Daniel Suarez of the Cup Series received a penalty from NASCAR on Wednesday for purposefully colliding with Alex Bowman’s vehicle on pit road after the Circuit of the Americas race on Sunday.
Daniel Suarez continuously crashed into the rear of Bowman’s No. 48 Chevrolet as both drivers rolled their cars into pit road following the race on Sunday at COTA. Suarez was upset over an accident in Turn 1 earlier in overtime that had left him far back in the pack.
Suarez was penalized $50,000 by NASCAR for breaking Sections 4.4.B&D. NASCAR Member Conduct Note: After-race contact with another vehicle on pit road.
Suarez, 31, has the chance of asking that the National Motorsports Appeals Panel reconsider his punishment.
Suarez got shoved off the track and into Martin Truex Jr. on the first overtime restart while racing in the top-five and in contention for the victory in Sunday’s race, which required three overtimes.
Ross Chastain, a teammate of Suarez’s at Trackhouse Racing, went into Bowman, who hit Suárez and crashed into Truex. Suarez and Truex both suffered significant loss of positions as a result of their cars briefly stopping on the circuit.
When the race was ended, Suarez followed Bowman down pit road after knocking Chastain out of the way on the cool-down lap.
