William Byron’s victory made the 2021 NASCAR Cup Series season the 36th in a row to feature a Hendrick Motorsports victory.
William Byron led 102 laps of the 267-lap Dixie Vodka 400 NASCAR Cup Series race on Sunday at the four-turn, 1.5-mile (2.414-kilometer) Homestead-Miami Speedway in Homestead, Florida, to earn his first win of the 2021 season and his second of his career.
Hendrick Motorsports debuted in the Cup Series in 1984, and their only winless season since then came in 1985, when Geoffrey Bodine competed in 28 races, Brett Bodine in one, and the late Dick Brooks in one.
Since then, they have won at least once every season, and with Byron’s success, they have now done it in 36 straight seasons.
This increases the all-time record. Two other active streaks are just a few seasons away from Hendrick Motorsports’ record.
Team Penske opened the 2021 season on a winning streak of 30 years. They joined the Cup Series in 1972 but did not play from 1981 until 1989. They have won every season since their comeback, however they have yet to win in 2021 after three races.
Joe Gibbs Racing began the 2021 season with a string of 28 consecutive winning seasons after joining the Cup Series in 1992, their lone winless season. With Christopher Bell’s victory in the season’s second race at the Daytona International Speedway road course, they extended their winning streak to 29.
This season, Rick Hendrick’s team had a chance to break the all-time victories record, and Byron’s victory moved them one win closer.
Hendrick Motorsports had 263 wins in 4,273 entries before to the 2021 season, dating back to their start in 1984.
Petty Enterprises holds the record with 268 victories out of 2,817 entries. Their most recent victory came in 1999 at Martinsville Speedway, with the late John Andretti at the wheel.
Hendrick’s team is now just four wins away from breaking the record that they are poised to break after a seven-win season, their most successful season since winning nine races in 2015. They won the championship with Chase Elliott in the 2020 season, their first since Jimmie Johnson’s record-tying seventh in 2016.
