Lance Stroll: Aston Martin’s ‘objective’ is not to defeat Red Bull

Lance Stroll claims that Aston Martin’s “goal” for the next Formula One season isn’t to defeat Red Bull, who have dominated the competition since the introduction of the latest aerodynamic regulations in 2022.

Red Bull and three-time world champion Max Verstappen have been unbeatable for the past two seasons. Fernando Alonso was the only non-Red Bull racer to challenge the Dutchman in the first half of 2023, when Aston Martin’s performance decreased.

Despite this, the Silverstone-based squad shown this past year that they are capable of competing against the best team in the sport; according to Aston Martin Technical Director Dan Fallows, Red Bull is “absolutely beatable”.

But rather than going after the Austrians, Stroll has pointed out that the rising team is just aiming to be the “strongest” they can be after the introduction of their 2024 F1 rival, the AMR24, on Tuesday morning.

Going ahead, Stroll aims to compete for wins and take the fight to Red Bull, but this is more of a long-term goal at this point.

The Canadian understands that great outcomes are achievable when Aston Martin is operating at peak performance, and that this is their current top focus.

Stroll has disclosed that Aston Martin is still hard at work behind the scenes, even though they have only recently pulled the covers off their new vehicle (a shakedown test has also been carried out). However, he also notes that a far faster car is needed to contend with Red Bull.

“Projects in progress”

“I mean, we’ve just got to build a faster race car. It’s that’s simple really,” Stroll made fun of a few newspapers, including RacingNews365.

“In all seriousness, they’ve been dominating the sport for the last couple of years, since the new set of regulations. And Max has also been driving outstandingly, he’s on top form. So it’s a challenge for sure.

“I don’t think our goal is really to go out and beat Red Bull. I mean, we want to get there eventually. But our goal is really to just be the strongest team we can be. And we have a lot of ideas, a lot of things in the pipeline to be a much stronger team and that’s where our focus is at.

“When we were just trying to be as strong as we could be, a lot of the time we really had a great car, and we were able to fight for great positions and get some really strong results. So that’s our focus.”
