Leclerc will “sacrifice” everything to win the Ferrari championship

After committing to a renewed multi-year contract, Charles Leclerc wants to break Ferrari’s championship drought, which began with their 2008 Constructors’ Championship victory.

Charles Leclerc has stated that winning a championship for Ferrari is his “target” for his career, thus he would stop at nothing to achieve this during his upcoming commitment with the team.

With the exception of Kimi Raikkonen’s 2007 Drivers’ Championship, Ferrari has not won a championship since 2008. Felipe Massa and Raikkonen shared the previous title with the team in 2008.

Leclerc had been seen as the one who was most likely to end Ferrari’s drought since entering the F1 scene in 2018, but he hasn’t quite lived up to expectations.

When Leclerc first transferred from Alfa Romeo to Ferrari, the team was essentially uncompetitive. However, in 2022, he became Max Verstappen’s lone title opponent. But bad driving decisions and misguided tactics proved to be the pair’s undoing.

Many believe that Leclerc’s best chance of winning a championship for the historic side is in 2026 because the new power unit regulations will probably cause the pecking order to reset.

Leclerc’s new multi-year contract, which was finalized over the off-season, is said to extend several years beyond 2026, though its precise duration is unknown. Leclerc is expected to wear red until the end of 2029, according to Italian media, though Ferrari has not confirmed this.

Leclerc will have yet another obstacle in the form of Lewis Hamilton, who will undoubtedly be accompanied by the Monegasque in 2025 and 2026. Although Leclerc and Hamilton’s driving combination will improve Ferrari’s prospects in the Constructors’ Championship, it may lessen the 26-year-old’s chances of winning the World Championship.

No matter what effect Hamilton’s partnership may have starting next year, Leclerc is committed to winning a Scuderia championship.

A career ‘objective’ for Ferrari is the title

Leclerc told certain media, including RacingNews365, “I mean, obviously the contract is for many years, so I cannot go into details for that.” Having a championship together is, of course, the aim of this new pact.

“But again, it all depends on the situation I find myself in after this contract. I love Ferrari very much and my goal of my career is to win a title with Ferrari and I’ll do absolutely everything in order to win the title with Ferrari.

“And then for the future, I’ve just signed my new contract so I don’t want to be speaking about that now.”

It is not thought that 2024 will present him with the finest potential to win a title in the near future. Although most people still think Red Bull is the better team, Leclerc is looking for more than just a couple of wins.

“No, no, no, it’s, it’s not enough,” added Leclerc, when asked if two or three wins is acceptable. “I mean, I want to win as many races as possible, then we’ll do the counter at the end of the year, and to also understand where we will be at after the first race to understand how competitive we are.

“But yeah, it’s very difficult now to also draw a picture of where we will stand after the first race, it will depend on that as well. But two or three victories is not my target, I want to win as many races as possible.”
