Simon Lazenby, broadcaster of Sky F1 says Mercedes “owe” Lewis Hamilton a lot for what he’s done for the team.
It has already been addressed how Mercedes will handle the seven-time World Champion, Lewis Hamilton, who announced his 2025 transfer to Ferrari prior to the 2024 season beginning.
Hamilton has won six Drivers’ Championships with Mercedes after making the unexpected switch from McLaren to the team for the 2013 campaign. 2024 will be his last season with the team.
Since the 2014 launch of the hybrid era, the 39-year-old has completely transformed Mercedes and is mostly to blame for all of their achievements. In fact, Hamilton and the Silver Arrows had the most productive partnership in Formula One history.
Driving for the Brackley-based team, Hamilton has won an incredible 82 races, accounting for 65.6% of the company’s total wins in the highest level of racing. According to Lazenby, the German manufacturer owes the motorist from Stevenage “everything,” and Hamilton should be treated with the same level of respect by the team this year.
Lazenby believes that this year will be typical for Hamilton despite his departure from Mercedes at the end of the next season, particularly if the team’s W15 has the capacity to contend for wins and perhaps even the championship.
Given that George Russell will be joining the squad the following year, Mercedes will probably begin to favor him around the middle of 2024. But Lazenby doubts that this will be possible if Hamilton is a contender for an eighth Drivers’ Championship.
Title challenge the ‘key’
“I think the thing is with Lewis, it’s an exceptional case, isn’t it?” Lazenby stated in the podcast for Sky F1. “At the end of the day, it’s Lewis. And Lewis has brought everything to Mercedes.
“Therefore, they kind of do owe him a little bit. I think they owe him everything really. And they probably owe him the respect that he deserves to treat him like the great champion that he is for the time that he has remaining at Mercedes.”
Lazenby added: “I don’t think it’s going to be emotion, I don’t think it’s going to be anything to do with that. It’s about he’ll get through the season, he’ll know early on whether he’s got a car to compete for the championship and I think that could be the key. If he does, they’ll have to rally round whoever’s the best driver again.”
