Carlos Sainz may be playing for the last time with a top squad in 2024 because Lewis Hamilton will take his place the following season.
Carlos Sainz isn’t confident if the 2024 Formula One season will be his “last chance” to win a world championship.
Lewis Hamilton’s dramatic decision to team up with Charles Leclerc in 2025 has left the Spaniard without a place, even though Sainz is one of the most desirable drivers available.
Right now, there are two spots open among the top teams; Mercedes and Red Bull both have just one racer signed for the upcoming season. Only George Russell has been assigned at Mercedes, and Max Verstappen’s contract at Red Bull is set to expire at the end of 2028.
Sainz left Red Bull’s sister team in the latter half of the 2017 season to join Renault, and he has been connected to the Silver Arrows and a potential return to the team. Sainz, who is only 29 years old, is probably approaching his prime, therefore there are going to be many possibilities for him.
The most speculation surrounds Audi’s 2026 Formula One entrance, while the German automaker is unlikely to fight for the championship right away and its current Stake F1 configuration may not be the most alluring. Obviously, if Fernando Alonso leaves, Aston Martin may also have a spot open for the following year; nevertheless, the two-time World Champion has already stated that he intends to sign an extension.
‘Many options’ for 2025
Sainz spoke to the media, including RacingNews365, “I hope it’s not my last chance to win or to go for a title.”
“With so many options open for 2025 in the market, I will make sure I also look for the most interesting ones in that sense.
“It’s such an important year for me because I’m still wearing red, and I still have the target of becoming Champion with Ferrari and I still have one more chance. But my ultimate chance is to become World Champion in general no matter who you achieve it with, obviously, ideally with Ferrari this year.
“But if not, there will be other opportunities and other chances hopefully in the future. I feel ready for whatever comes. I have prepared myself better than ever this season and I just want to get started and focus on 2024.”
