Unstoppable. Jeffrey Herlings is having a fantastic season, and today he won not one, but two MXGP races, taking advantage of Tim Gajser’s less than stellar performance to take the MXGP World Championship by storm.
Jorge Prado, ahead of Herlings, Febvre, Jonass, and Coldenhoff, took the lead in the first corner of the race. Tim Gajser was 12th after another rough start.
Prado was trying to escape and was 1.6s ahead of Herlings, but the #84 quickly began to recover, as did the rest of the riders closest to the front, with the top three being divided by 3.7s.
Gajser, whose World Cup lead was at risk, was attempting to recover in the standings and had already joined the top 10.
With seven minutes and two laps left, Herlings was still attempting to overtake Prado, who was doing a good job of defending himself, but the #84 was going to consummate the overtaking. Gajser, in turn, beat Simpson and moved up to ninth place.
The race was fast approaching the end, Gajser continued to gain positions, behind the loss and was in this stage eighth.
Herlings maintained his position to the end, ensuring a double victory on Italian soil, and with eighth place in #243, the KTM rider ascended to the top of the world MXGP rankings.
Gajser currently has 371 points, one more than Herlings. With 367 points, Romain Febvre is in third place.
