Las Vegas penalty report: Kevin Harvick’s crew chief had one race suspended

Rodney Childers, Kevin Harvick’s crew chief, was given a one-race ban by NASCAR following last weekend’s racing at Las Vegas Motor Speedway.

Childers has been ruled out of Sunday’s Cup playoff race at Talladega Superspeedway (2 p.m. ET, NBC) after Harvick’s car was discovered in post-race inspection in Las Vegas with two lug nuts that were not secure.

Childers was also penalized $20,000 by NASCAR for the infraction.

At Talladega, Stewart-Haas Racing competition director Greg Zipadelli will take over as Harvick and the No. 4 team’s crew chief in place of Childers.

Four other Cup crew chiefs were fined $10,000 in Las Vegas for having a single lug nut that was not secure during post-race inspection:

  • Cliff Daniels, Hendrick Motorsports (No. 5 – Kyle Larson)
  • Ben Beshore, Joe Gibbs Racing (No. 18 – Kyle Busch)
  • Phil Surgen, Chip Ganassi Racing (No. 42 – Ross Chastain)
  • Travis Mack, Trackhouse Racing (No. 99 – Daniel Suarez)

After Gase’s car lost its left rear wheel and crashed hard during last Sunday’s Cup race, the No. 15 Rick Ware Racing team was not punished.

Gase was taken to a local hospital for additional evaluation after a first check in the infield care center. He was eventually released.
