Sergio Perez: Red Bull team orders could be ‘complex’ in Mexico

Sergio Perez arrives at the Mexican Grand Prix riding the back of a run of good performances, but might be faced with a difficult scenario at his home race.

Sergio Perez concedes that if he is faced with a team orders call during the Mexican Grand Prix, it may be “complicated.”

Perez, who has podium results in the two previous Grands Prix in Turkey and the United States, appears to be in for a strong home race.

However, with teammate Max Verstappen fighting for the title, the Mexican could have to give up a home victory in order to assist Verstappen if he finds himself in the lead of the race.

While Perez is confident that he has the team’s full support, he recognizes that a difficult situation could arise in Sunday’s race.

“It’s complicated,” Perez replied. “We should see what circumstances we have in the race.

“At the end of the day, we are drivers working as a team and the main focus is on the team.

“It’s the big picture. We will have to look at the circumstances. And that’s the beauty of racing, that decisions are made in the moment, in seconds, even though they are very complicated issues.”

High hopes for a win

Despite this, Perez is optimistic about what the team can do in the Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez, where the circuit’s high altitude is supposed to favour Red Bull over Mercedes.

“I think we are in a good rhythm to fight for the podium in the last races,” Perez said.

“We are fighting for a lot in these last races, and every point will be important. I would be proud to be able to achieve one of my dreams since my childhood [and win].

“This is a real opportunity that depends on me and my team, whereas other years it depended on other factors. So there is a very real chance, and my motivation is 100 percent.”

Perez isn’t the only Red Bull driver who is looking forward to the Mexican Grand Prix. Helmut Marko, the team’s advisor, has also stated that the goal is for Verstappen and Perez to finish 1-2.
