After his incident in Bahrain, Romain Grosjean revealed that Sebastian Vettel paid him a visit when he was in hospital.
Following Sebastian Vettel arrived early at his hospital bed the morning after his incident in Bahrain last November, Romain Grosjean has revealed the facts of a discussion he had with him.
Grosjean was involved in a terrifying crash at Sakhir, crashing through the metal barrier and cutting his Haas in two. Grosjean clambered free after car took fire, in what has become one of sport’s most iconic images in recent years.
Grosjean has written a book on his near-death experience in the car crash. The book, titled Le Mort En Face, is now only accessible in French and addresses the vulnerabilities he felt as a sportsman and a father in the wake of his crash.
He said that he received an unexpected visit from then-Ferrari driver Sebastian Vettel the morning following the incident.
“On Monday, 30th November (a day after the crash), I woke up at six. Someone came early and quite unexpectedly: Sebastian Vettel,” wrote Grosjean in the book.
“He was worried about me. Seb is probably the driver that I feel closest to. He is living the same life as I am with his three kids and he wants to protect that life as much as possible.”
Grosjean had expected to recover quickly enough to compete in the season finale in Abu Dhabi to finish his F1 career, but due to the severity of his burn injuries on his hands, this proved impossible.
He added that Vettel had tried to discourage him from racing in the first place, urging him to rest up properly.
“When I told him I wanted to drive at the last race he told me: ‘No, you need to go home and rest!’ I explained to him that I know it’s the end of my career and I don’t want it to end like that.”
Grosjean’s F1 career, unfortunately, draws to a close in that way. Mercedes attempted to arrange a test in an older car for him in order for him to properly bid goodbye to F1, but the planned run in France during the summer had to be cancelled because to COVID travel limitations.
Grosjean, on the other hand, is back on his feet. Grosjean’s rookie season with Dale Coyne Racing in IndyCar was impressive enough to earn him a full-time seat with Andretti Autosport for 2022.
He’s also confirmed that his book would be released in English, though no particular date is set.
