Just before the halfway point of NASCAR’s longest race, Denny Hamlin’s race came to an abrupt stop in a catastrophic collision on the frontstretch at Charlotte (N.C.) Motor Speedway.
When Hamlin pushed up the track while dueling Chase Elliott, Elliott made contact with the outside wall.
Following that, Elliott came down the track and front-sprinted Hamlin into the outside barrier. Fortunately, neither racer was hurt, and both of their races were done. After being examined, both of them were let out of the infield care center.
“I got right-rear hooked in the middle of the straightaway,” a frustrated Hamlin said afterwards.
“It’s a tantrum and he (Elliott) shouldn’t be racing next week. Right rear hooks are absolutely unacceptable. I don’t care. It is the same thing that Bubba Wallace did with Kyle Larson. Exact same. He shouldn’t be racing. It’s a tantrum.”
Later, he repeated, saying, “He shouldn’t be racing. He shouldn’t be racing.”
Elliott claimed that it was not deliberate, telling PRN: “Just unfortunate. The 11 (Hamlin) ran us up into the fence and once you get the right side in the wall they’re killed. I hate it happened but once you hit the wall with the right side you just can’t drive them anymore.”
Hamlin was making reference to an event that happened at Las Vegas Motor Speedway the previous year. Wallace was penalized by NASCAR for hooking Larson with his right and sent him into the outside wall.
NASCAR said it will look into the situation.
