Trouble occurred both on and off the track amid NASCAR’s longest race of the year, with a heated argument taking place on pit road during a red flag period.
The Coca-Cola 600 at Charlotte Motor Speedway experienced a brief red flag interruption in the midst of the 2nd stage because of the bad weather. 157 of the 400 laps were finished.
In order to assess the situation and dry the racetrack, NASCAR parked the cars on pit road and permitted the racers to get out of their cars.
Aric Almirola and Bubba Wallace emerged to be having a furious argument during that time, according to video taken by a fan.
They eventually start arguing again after Almirola shoves Wallace. After the race restarted, nothing spectacular happened on the track; Wallace went on to finish fourth, and Almirola finished 25th.
“Yeah, we were just frustrated on how we raced each other,” Wallace said after the race. “We were in stage two of the Coke 600. I finished fourth and that’s a good day for our team.”
When asked why he wasn’t taken aback by Almirola’s reaction, he then told FOX Sports: “When you walk around with two faces, that’s what you get.”
Wallace has recently been on a roll, finishing in the top five three times in a row. Additionally, he finished second to Kyle Larson in the All-Star Race at North Wilkesboro. He is currently 35 points over the cut line for the playoffs.
When asked about the argument, Almirola shared his thoughts: “Early in the race I felt like I gave him a lot of room we were racing and I felt like I was running him pretty clean and I felt like he was racing me really dirty. I let him go and then he shot me the bird, so I just went to go ask him why he shot me the bird and he started mouthing off and cussing at me and I just told him I wasn’t going to have that. Yeah, disappointing, but that’s him.”
Almirola, who has only had one top-ten result this year, leaves Charlotte in 26th place in the overall standings.
