In 2023, Aston Martin has emerged as Red Bull’s main rival, and the squad reveals that they are making every effort to take full advantage as much as possible.
Tom McCullough, head of Aston Martin Performance, reveals that the team is making every effort to take full advantage of their improved access to the wind tunnel over Red Bull.
F1 has a sliding scale for aerodynamic testing, which means that during the next season, the teams that place close to the bottom of the Constructors’ Championship are given more wind tunnel time than the top teams.
At P7 at the end of the 2022 season, Aston Martin now has a larger wind tunnel allowance than Red Bull, who claimed both championships the year before.
Additionally, Red Bull received a $7 million fine and a 10% reduction in aerodynamic and CFD (Computational Fluid Dynamics) allowances for exceeding the 2021 budget cap. Team manager Christian Horner understands that this may make it difficult for the Milton Keynes-based team to maintain its competitiveness beyond 2023.
The ‘advantage’ of Aston Martin
When questioned if Aston Martin will benefit from having more wind tunnel time, McCullough told the media, including RacingNews365.com: “It’s definitely an advantage, so we’re trying to use that as much as we can do at the moment.
“For sure, the more time you’ve got, the more tests you can do, the more data you can analyse, so it’s good to have more time.”
“We’ll get to see how that performs where efficiency is critical. Monaco is obviously dominated a lot by low-speed car performance.
Although Aston Martin has emerged as Red Bull’s biggest rival thus far in 2023, the two teams are still distanced by 58 points in the Constructors rankings.
When asked about whether the Monaco Grand Prix, which will take place later in May, may provide a great opportunity for the squad to compete against Red Bull, McCullough responded, “Again, I think Red Bull will turn up with a max downforce rear wing.
“At the moment, we make ourselves look a little bit better relative to some people, because of the size of the wing we carry. When everyone’s on the max wing, maybe that will even out a bit, but we’re still learning, to be honest.
“At the same time, nobody’s standing still, so we’re hopefully going to be bringing some developments going forwards, as everybody’s going to be doing, and the picture will rattle out.”
