Bell earns the Talladega Cup pole position after a dramatic qualifying session

Christopher Bell wanted a playoff boost after a difficult week at Texas, and he received one on Saturday.

On Sunday’s playoff race at Talladega (Ala.) Superspeedway, Bell defeated Kyle Larson by holding on to the lead.

Bell almost outperformed Larson with an average lap pace of 180.591 mph (180.516 mph). Third place went to Denny Hamlin, Bell’s teammate at Joe Gibbs Racing (180.421 mph).

Bell is now positioned 11th out of 12 racers with two races left in the second round of the NASCAR Cup Series playoffs.

The four racers with the lowest point totals who haven’t claimed a victory in the round after the race on October 9 at Charlotte Roval will not be eligible to compete in the remaining playoff rounds.

For the 2022 season and his career, Bell’s pole position is his fourth.

“We’re in the best spot (to capitalize), that’s for sure,” Bell said. “We need to make up a lot of points over these next two races. Hopefully, we can maintain our track position.

“Talladega has been maybe a little bit better for me than Daytona so, yeah, just really proud of everyone on his No. 20 Joe Gibbs Racing team. They’ve done a really good job bringing fast race cars, week-in and week-out.

“We have to score points in Stage 1 and Stage 2 and then obviously finish up as high as we can in the race. We’re going to be after it hard. I’ll have to see if I can do my job and keep it up front.”

Fourth place went to Aric Almirola, while Chase Briscoe completed the top 5.

Ross Chastain, Noah Gragson (filling in for Alex Bowman), Tyler Reddick, William Byron, and Ty Gibbs round out the top-10 lineup, though Gibbs’s No. 23 Toyota might need repairs and he might not begin on Sunday.
