Although Kyle Busch began on the front row, it took him a very long time to reach the finish line at World Wide Technology Raceway at Gateway.
Busch led 121 of the 243 laps during the course of his dominant performance, but with only five laps completed, the race was delayed for nearly two hours because of thunder.
On Lap 184, Busch surged past Denny Hamlin and Kyle Larson during a resumption to take the lead for the final time, but he then had to fend off numerous difficulties during restarts.
He won all of them, including the overtime race, and beat Hamlin by 0.517 seconds to take home his third NASCAR Cup victory of the 2023 season.
He now has 11 seasons with at least three victories. This is his 63rd career victory.
“That was pretty awesome,” said Busch, who was met by his son, Brexton, on the track after the win. “Man, to sit on the pole, lead a lot of laps, my guys did just a great job today. It was pretty flawless for us. All the fans go out and celebrate with us.
“We’re going to have a great time with this one. This one is pretty cool.”
Joey Logano, the winner of the Gateway race the year before, came in third, followed by Larson in fourth and Martin Truex Jr. in fifth.
Ryan Blaney, Daniel Suarez, William Byron, Michael McDowell, who survived an early-race spin, and Kevin Harvick made up the top 10.
