Nick Cassidy challenged for the championship at the Berlin E-Prix, which was interrupted by protestors.
Despite protestors interfering with the race, Nick Cassidy skillfully maintained his focus and prevailed in the first Formula E race of the year in Berlin.
Protestors entered the venue during the beginning process before to the race, the second of a doubleheader at Tempelhof, and sat down on the course, postponing the start.
Due to concerns that something had been placed on the racetrack, race director Scot Elkins temporarily ordered marshals to look at the surface before the race began, with pole-sitter Robin Frijns taking the lead.
The race immediately fell into a pattern, repeating the first race from yesterday, with leaders making their attacks early to drop towards the middle of the pack and conserve energy.
After Cassidy of Envision Racing moved to the front, Jake Dennis and Jean-Eric Vergne were failed to pass the Kiwi due to Cassidy’s defense.
In addition to Pascal Wehrlein’s disappointing seventh-place finish, Cassidy’s performance has cut the Porsche driver’s championship lead from 23 points to only four heading into the upcoming round in Monaco.
Cassidy makes amends
After having a qualifying lap time removed, Cassidy began eighth in the German capital and took part in the continuous position changes, moving up to the front and creating a trio with Dennis and Vergne.
Antonio Felix da Costa and Sam Bird’s collision in the final laps enabled the trio to separate and race unopposed to the finish line, with Dennis willing to settle for second after his dismal performance on Saturday.
Mitch Evans, who was victorious in Race 1, finished fourth for Jaguar, while da Costa and Max Gunther also outperformed championship leader Wehrlein, who came in seventh.
With the poor performance, Wehrlein only contributed 6 points to his overall tally, reaching 100 for the season, while Cassidy was at 96 after winning his second E-Prix after New York last year.
The points positions were rounded out by Stoffel Vandoorne – the World Champion’s only finish of the weekend – as Nico Muller and Dan Ticktum closed out the points – the latter having being severely critical of his NIO 333 team’s energy efficiency after the first race.
