The NASCAR Truck Series race at Pocono Raceway on Saturday was won by Chandler Smith, who withstood Ryan Preece’s relentless attacks in the closing laps.
With 14 of the 60 circuits left, Preece took the lead after the restart, but Smith overtook Preece with a boost from driver Corey Heim of Kyle Busch Motorsports.
Smith had nearly a half-second advantage over Preece with 10 laps remaining, but Preece closed the gap in the last three laps. Smith fought him off by 0.262 secs to secure the victory.
Smith has now won twice in 2022 (he also triumphed in Las Vegas) and four times overall. In the series playoffs, Smith secured the second seed after regular-season winner Zane Smith.
Ben Rhodes, the latest series winner, John Hunter Nemechek, Stewart Friesen, Christian Eckes, Ty Majeski, Carson Hocevar, Grant Enfinger, and Matt Crafton are the other eight racers who have qualified for the playoffs.
“God’s good. We’ve been through a little bit of struggler here recently but just when we need to shine, we start shining,” Chandler Smith said. “This KBM Toyota Tundra was fast today. Thank you to the No. 51 team (Heim) – this win is just as much mine as it is theirs.
“We didn’t have a lot of playoff points going into the playoffs and today we got a stage win and won the race. So, I think we’re going to be pretty sharp going to IRP (next weekend).”
In the race, Nemechek came in third, Heim fourth, and Hocevar fifth. Austin Hill, Majeski, Eckes, Derek Kraus, and Tanner Gray made up the final ten.
