After a 12-year absence, the Portuguese superstar has returned to the English Premier League club.
Manchester United has completed the two-year signing of Cristiano Ronaldo from Juventus, bringing the Portuguese superstar back to the club where he won eight major championships between 2003 and 2009.
Last week, Manchester United revealed that they had reached an agreement with the Italian giants to bring the 36-year-old striker back to the Premier League club. After passing a medical exam, obtaining a visa, and agreeing on personal terms, the transfer was completed on Tuesday.
Juventus will be paid a price of 15 million euros ($17.75 million) over five years. Ronaldo’s contract might be enhanced by 8 million euros ($9.5 million) if he meets “specific performance objectives.”
“Manchester United is a club that has always had a special place in my heart and I have been overwhelmed by all the messages I have received since the announcement on Friday,” Ronaldo said in a statement.
“I cannot wait to play at Old Trafford in front of a full stadium and see all the fans again. I’m looking forward to joining up with the team after the international games, and I hope we have a very successful season ahead.”
After the international break, Ronaldo is expected to rejoin the group and might make his debut against Newcastle United on September 11.
Ronaldo, who has won titles with Real Madrid and Juventus, has won the Premier League three times with Manchester United, but the team has not won the trophy since 2013.
“You run out of words to describe Cristiano. He is not only a marvellous player but also a great human being,” United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer said.
“To have the desire and the ability to play at the top level for such a long period requires a very special person.”
Ronaldo’s return to United, according to goalkeeper David de Gea, would be a “dream.” He was hailed as a “born winner” by former captain Roy Keane.
Between 2003 and 2009, Ronaldo spent six seasons at Old Trafford, where he won the Ballon d’Or as the world’s greatest player in 2008, as well as team awards, before joining Real Madrid for a then-world record 80 million pounds ($110.24 million).
He scored 118 goals in his first time in Manchester, winning the Premier League Golden Boot in 2007-2008, the year he helped United win their last Champions League title.
