Cole Custer won the pole for Sunday evening’s Dirt Race at Bristol (Tenn.) Motor Speedway, brightening an otherwise bleak season.
Custer, who has yet to place in the top ten in the NASCAR Cup Series season of 2022, placed second in the first of four 15-lap heat races on Saturday and overtook seven cars.
Christopher Bell, who won Heat No. 2 and collected 14 points, took second place with 16 total points.
Custer’s Cup career has spanned 83 starts and the pole is his first.
“The guys did a great job guessing right on the track,” he said. “It’s so much different than practice and we hit on it. It’s just awesome, first career pole, I never thought I’d get my first career pole at a dirt race.
“When you start in the back you have to worry about just not going a lap down in the first run. To be able to start on the pole is a huge deal for our team. The guys did a great job on the car. I was able to get to the top (lane) and kind of start rolling.”
Tyler Reddick, Chase Briscoe, and Kyle Larson will start third, fourth, and fifth, respectively.
Justin Haley, Ty Dillon, Alex Bowman, Chase Elliott, and Joey Logano, the winner of the first Bristol Dirt Race last year, round out the top ten starting lineup.
