Sunday’s NASCAR Cup Series race at Pocono Raceway will feature a first row led by Denny Hamlin and Joe Gibbs Racing.
The racer that qualified second-to-last for the championship race on Saturday, Hamlin, recorded the fastest average track pace of 169.991 mph.
Kyle Busch, a member of Hamlin’s JGR squad, came in second (169.498 mph), and Chase Elliott finished third (169.364 mph). The top five was completed by Chris Buescher and Kyle Larson.
For Hamlin, the pole marks his third of the 2022 campaign and 36th overall. He won in Charlotte earlier this year starting from the pole.
“I hope it just keeps driving like that. It’s good,” Hamlin said of his No. 11 Toyota. “We made some big strides from practice, honestly. The team did a phenomenal job getting this thing ready for qualifying.
“I made some adjustments – and all better.”
Kurt Busch lost control coming off Turn 3 as he started his qualifying run in the championship round, backing his No. 45 Toyota into the wall and severely damaging it.
Kurt Busch will have to begin at the bottom of the field in Sunday’s race, regardless of whether he switches to a backup car or significant changes are done to his vehicle.
Ryan Blaney, Bubba Wallace, Martin Truex Jr., Daniel Suarez, Kurt Busch, and the remaining members of the top-10 starting lineup (but he will begin from the rear).
