Chase Elliott, who finished third, unexpectedly won Sunday’s NASCAR Cup Series race when the victor and runner-up were disqualified.

NASCAR revealed that Denny Hamlin’s No. 11 Toyota and Kyle Busch’s No. 18 Joe Gibbs Racing vehicle had failed post-race testing more than two and a half hours after the finish of Sunday’s race at Pocono Raceway, which Busch had won.

“There were some issues discovered that affected aero in the vehicles. The part was the front fascia. There really was no reason why there was material somewhere where it shouldn’t have been, according to Cup Series managing director Brad Moran.

“They have the opportunity to appeal it and it will be all sorted out next week. I can’t get into details on what the issues were but both vehicles had the same issue and unfortunately they were not acceptable to pass inspection.”

Because the new post-race inspection rules were enacted by NASCAR in 2019, this is the first time a Cup Series top driver has been disqualified. Both the Xfinity and Truck series have had race winners disqualified.

Elliott will be given the victory, his series-leading fourth of the 2022 season, barring a change based on an appeal, despite not leading a circuit in the race.

After-race inspection on Elliott’s No. 9 Hendrick Motorsports Chevrolet was successful.

Hamlin spent the last 13 circuits battling Busch to avoid losing what would have been his third victory of the year after putting Ross Chastain into the wall in a late-race fight for the lead.

Busch’s second-place result at the race marked his first top-five performance since taking second at Gateway in early June.

NASCAR seized both vehicles and transported them back to its Concord, North Carolina, R&D facility.

Both racers lost all stage and playoff points they had accrued during the race and were given last-place scores as a consequence of the DQ.

Elliott, Tyler Reddick, Daniel Suarez, Christopher Bell, Kyle Larson, Michael McDowell, Martin Truex Jr., Bubba Wallace, Erik Jones, and Austin Dillon round out the new top-10 finishers from Pocono, barring a change on appeal.

Additionally, the vehicles of Michael McDowell and Ricky Stenhouse Jr. will be transported to the R&D Center for additional examination.
