The Coca-Cola 600, which was postponed by bad weather on Monday, came down to a fight between Ryan Blaney and William Byron despite a race that featured 31 lead changes and 31 cautions.
In the race on Monday, Byron and Blaney both had powerful cars and never lost the lead.
Blaney’s No. 12 Penske Ford may have had a little bit more speed, but Byron benefited from having the No. 1 pit spot because qualifying on Saturday was canceled due to the bad weather.
Because of this, Byron’s No. 24 Hendrick Motorsports pit crew frequently got him off pit road ahead of Blaney and the other competitors.
38 of the 400 circuits remained after a restart, and Byron comfortably regained the lead with the support of four fresh tires. Nevertheless, Blaney overtook Byron when a caution was issued for a collision on Lap 375, earning him the victory.
When the race restarted with 20 laps remaining, Blaney soon took the lead and Byron was unable to overtake him before the checkered flag.
“We just needed a little bit,” Byron, 25, said. “Really happy for Ryan. He really deserves it. He’s a good dude. Cool to see him get a win.
“We just needed a little bit. I felt like there were enough restarts for him to get back to the front. He had that one pit road where he lost a few spots, and it was kind of between us and (Kyle Larson)
“I knew if (Blaney) and (Tyler Reddick) were a little bit stronger than we were.”
Recently, Byron has been having success.
He now holds the NASCAR Cup Series records for both victories (three) and laps led (687). In his final five races, he hasn’t placed worse than sixth.
“The car was great tonight. Just not quite good enough,” Byron said. “Really proud of the effort. Pit crew was phenomenal on pit road. Those guys are just high energy, and that pit stall helps.
“Just a credit to the few weeks before Darlington. Just proud of where our team is at. Just needed a little bit more.”
