For Ecclestone, Schumacher’s statement “spoiled a lot of things for him”

After being released by Haas at the conclusion of the 2022 season, Mick Schumacher hasn’t taken part in an F1 event; yet, Bernie Ecclestone thinks things may have been quite different for the German driver.

Former Formula 1 boss Bernie Ecclestone thinks that if Mick Schumacher had been a part of the Red Bull Junior program, he would have been successful in the sport.

German driver Schumacher advanced through the ranks at Ferrari, winning the F2 title for Prema, and then advancing to the pinnacle of single-seater racing in 2021 with Haas.

The American-owned team decided to break ways with Schumacher after just two seasons, the second of which had been spoiled by early accidents. Instead, they went with fellow countryman Nico Hulkenberg, who had been without a seat for a period of three years.

Sixth place at the 2022 Austrian Grand Prix became Schumacher’s best finish in the Formula One race.

“That ruined everything for him”

After quitting Haas, Schumacher worked for Mercedes as a development and reserve driver. He also joined Alpine’s World Endurance Championship Hypercar team for the following season.

While thinking about the WEC driver, Schumacher maintained that Alpine’s involvement in Formula One made it a “interesting factor.”

However, Ecclestone has hinted that if he had partnered with Red Bull’s development program, his Formula One career would have taken a different turn.

“He would have been in good hands in a team like Red Bull with its junior programme, where they help young drivers to win,” Ecclestone told the German Press Agency.

“That spoilt a lot of things for him. If his father had been there with him, he could have had a completely different influence on him.”
