Hamilton closes the gap on Verstappen in the Formula One driver standings

Lewis Hamilton found a way to cut into Max Verstappen’s lead in the Drivers’ standings after a dramatic weekend that saw him get a grid penalty and be excluded from Friday’s qualifying results.

After Lewis Hamilton claimed the chequered flag at the Sao Paulo Grand Prix, Max Verstappen’s lead in the Drivers’ standings was cut to 14 points.

Hamilton came from P10 on the grid to win his sixth race of the season on a weekend that saw him miss qualifying on Friday and serve a five-place grid penalty for switching to a new Internal Combustion Engine.

Although Verstappen’s weekend wasn’t perfect, his push for a first World Championship was aided by his 2nd performance in Saturday’s Sprint Qualifying race, which won him two points. He was also assisted by Sergio Perez’s fastest lap late in the race on Sunday, which prevented Hamilton from earning an extra point.

With Hamilton’s victory and Valtteri Bottas’ third-place finish, Mercedes has opened up an 11-point lead over Red Bull in the Constructors’ standings.

After an impressive performance in Brazil, Ferrari now leads McLaren by 31.5 points in the battle for third, with Charles Leclerc and Carlos Sainz finishing P5 and P6 respectively.
