In the race at Richmond on Sunday, Chris Buescher never took the lead, but he came dangerously close to upending the NASCAR Cup Series playoff picture.
Buescher has had a hit-and-miss season, but as the 2022 playoffs get underway, the RFK Racer has demonstrated that he had the skill and pace to challenge for the victory.
At this point, Buescher can only qualify for the playoffs with a victory, and his effort on Sunday once again demonstrated that he is still a genuine contender to become the 16th different racer to achieve a victory this year, a record.
Buescher and Kevin Harvick were in a tight duel for the lead when the last round of green-flag pit stops cycled around late on Sunday.
For more than 40 circuits, Buescher pursued Harvick before Christopher Bell finally overtook him for second with four circuits to go. Harvick managed to finish first.
“Really close. Everyone on our (team) did such a tremendous job overnight because we didn’t know we were in this position (Saturday). I didn’t qualify real well, and everyone worked hard and had a fantastic race car,” Buescher said.
“I think it’s a little easy with this (playoff) format to feel like third-place doesn’t matter, but it’s nice to be close and to keep progressing and getting better as we’ve gotten through the summer.”
At this stage in the season, Buescher must either triumph or the No. 17 team would miss the playoffs, despite the fact that he claimed he finally “burned the rear tyres up” when attempting to catch Harvick.
“We’ve been fast,” he said. “We just have to put it all together to show those results like we did here today.”
Buescher has had opportunity to compete for victories this season.
At the Indy Road Course three weeks ago, he thought he had a car that might have won after a fierce battle with final victor Daniel Suarez, but he ended 10th after suffering a freak fire in his car early in the race. He came second at Sonoma.
“We’ve had three or maybe four months now of really solid runs, really good speed, ever since Dover really, that we’ve been really close,” he said. “We’ve had some bad luck, had some mistakes that I’ve got to clean up.
“We’ve made progress through all of it. The results don’t always show it.”
Buescher was questioned about his possibilities given the upcoming race track at Watkins Glen, New York, as well as the uncertain regular season finale at Daytona.
“I’m excited,” he said. “I’m ready for the win.”
