At World Wide Technology Raceway at Gateway on Sunday, Kyle Busch won the pole position after holding off a strong battle with Ryan Blaney.
In Round 1 of qualifying, Blaney set the day’s top speed. His triumph in the Coca-Cola 600 this past weekend broke a 59-race winless streak.
Blaney was among the last of the ten cars that qualified, but he was only.008 seconds off from starting this week’s race where he finished last week’s.
Busch, who went out in the first five in the last race, finished with the fastest average lap speed of 137.187 mph to take the lead and claim his first pole position since 2019. His career total is currently 33.
“I did a lot of things (different),” Busch said of the difference between Rounds 1 and 2. “We made a lot of adjustments to the race car as well. I knew there was speed in it, it was just a matter of hitting it right and doing everything I needed to do behind the wheel.
“I got everything I could get out of it in (Turns) 1 and 2 and seemed to be just good enough in (Turns) 3 and 4 beat (Blaney). Overall, a great day for us.”
Denny Hamlin, who was quickest in the long runs during Saturday’s practice, finished third (136.903 mph), placing Blaney, who finished second, at 137.153 mph.
In reference to his effort to pass Busch, Blaney commented, “I really thought that lap was going to get there. “I was impressed with the lap (Busch) put down, that was a fast lap.”
Martin Truex Jr. and Kevin Harvick completed the top five.
Joey Logano, William Byron, Ross Chastain, Tyler Reddick, and Austin Cindric round out the top 10 starters.
Both Blaney and Brad Keselowski were disqualified from pit selection for the race on Sunday because they both failed the pre-qualifying inspection repeatedly.
