Leclerc explains why Ferrari is committed for the long term

A few days ago Charles Leclerc signed a new long-term contract with Ferrari in an effort to continue his World Championship campaign with the Italian team.

After his current contract extension, Charles Leclerc gave an explanation for why he decided to stick with Ferrari for an extended period of time.

With the Italian team having already finalized their lineup for at least 2025 and 2026, Ferrari has been at the forefront of this year’s very early “silly season.”

Charles Leclerc secured a multi-year contract extension in January, although Ferrari has not yet disclosed the precise duration of the agreement.

The Italian media has reported that the Monegasque’s new deal is valid through the end of 2029.

But in a more unexpected decision that was revealed at the beginning of February, Lewis Hamilton will take Carlos Sainz’s seat in the championship race the following year.

At the end of the 2024 season, the seven-time World Champion will depart Mercedes to finalize his incredible transfer to Maranello.

The driver combination of Hamilton and Leclerc is excellent and embodies the team’s goals to break their title drought. The last time that a Ferrari racer won the Drivers’ Championship was Kimi Raikkonen in 2007. Ferrari hasn’t won the Constructors’ Championship since 2008.

‘I believe in the project’

Leclerc agreed to such a lengthy term in part because he wants to put an end Ferrari’s title drought. The 26-year-old has been associated with Ferrari for a considerable amount of time, having enrolled in their driver academy in 2016.

But the rumored duration of Leclerc’s contract is evidence of a close relationship between Ferrari and Leclerc. For Leclerc, the past six years with Ferrari have not been without difficulty, especially in the last two seasons.

He seemed unaffected by his affection for the manufacturer, even if he was much more outspoken on the radio and evidently annoyed with some strategic calls. Leclerc supports Ferrari’s efforts to achieve both their goals of being the fastest car and their intended outcomes.

“Well, of course, it’s part of my decision,” Leclerc told select media including RacingNews365.

“I think not only because it feels like a family, but most of all, because they were the first people to believe in me straight from even before I got to Formula 1.

“They gave me the opportunity to get into Formula 1, they gave me the opportunity of being a Ferrari driver, and getting a car that was good enough to get my first pole position and my first win.

“But more than anything, I think what made me sign for a longer contract is because I believe in the project. Otherwise, I wouldn’t have done that.

“So I believe in the project fully. I love Ferrari, that’s for sure, and I think that’s clear to everybody.

“But most of all, I believe in the project, and I believe we have the best chance in order to become the best car on the grid in the next years. So this is why I renewed with Ferrari.”
