In Saturday’s NASCAR Cup practice at World Wide Technology Raceway at Gateway, the race champion from the previous year continued where he left off.
With an average lap pace of 136.857 mph during Saturday’s first practice session, defending Cup winner Logano was in the lead.
The first 20 minutes of the session produced the top five single-lap times. William Byron came in third, Tyler Reddick fourth, Michael McDowell fifth, and Kyle Larson second.
The quickest car in Group B and ninth quickest overall was driven by Aric Almirola.
Denny Hamlin had the quickest average speed (135.839 mph) among those who completed at least 10 consecutive laps, followed by McDowell and Reddick, respectively.
Group A
In the opening 20 minutes of the practice, Logano was among the first on the track and finished with the quickest average lap speed (136.857 mph).
Byron finished third (136.558 mph) and Larson was second (136.811).
“We learned a little bit of what not to do,” Byron commented. “I was running a little bit of the wrong line. This race track was our toughest last year.”
The top five was completed by Tyler Reddick and Michael McDowell.
After completing seven laps on the circuit, Brad Keselowski experienced a left rear tire blowout and was forced to make a pit stop.
Group B
With an average lap pace of 135.898 mph during the second, 20-minute session, Almirola took the lead.
Ross Chastain finished third (135.427 mph), and Martin Truex Jr. was second (135.672 mph).
The top two finishers were Ryan Blaney, who won the race the previous week, and Ty Gibbs.
The session was without issues that occurred on the course.
In the No. 7 Chevrolet driven by Spire Motorsports in place of Corey LaJoie, Carson Hocevar completed his first laps in a Next Gen car and finished 16th overall.
