According to Motorsport.com, the NASCAR All-Star Race will now be held at North Wilkesboro Speedway in 2023 after a sudden change in plans.
Speedway Motorsports reported earlier this year that North Wilkesboro would play host to 2 months of racing in 2022, the first in August on pavement and the second in October on dirt.
The road repair of the track’s surface, which is a component of Speedway Motorsports’ massive reconstruction plan, was initially expected to happen in 2023.
The scheduled October dirt races have been cancelled, according to XR Events, the organisation responsible for managing the racing activities at the racetrack.
According to sources, NASCAR and Speedway Motorsports have decided the 0.625-mile track’s present surface is adequate for use in NASCAR national series racing right now, allowing it to host the 2023 All-Star Race for the Cup Series.
Speedway Motorsports’ spokesman refused to discuss the issue on Wednesday night.
On Thursday morning in Raleigh, North Carolina, at the North Carolina Museum of History, representatives from Speedway Motorsports and NASCAR will make a “major announcement.”
Bringing back the legendary track
In 1949, the circuit held the inaugural NASCAR Cup Series race. The final NASCAR race at the racetrack was won in 1996 by Jeff Gordon, who is currently an executive with Hendrick Motorsports and a part of the NASCAR Hall of Fame.
The 75-year-old race track’s surroundings were cleaned up over a period of months by local volunteer groups. The facility’s infrastructure enhancements will be funded with $18 million from the N.C. state budget that was approved in November.

Speedway Motorsports President and CEO Marcus Smith had stated in April that the Truck Series was the most likely choice for the track due to the initially anticipated 2023 repaving, but that it would be the 2024 season “at the earliest” before it was feasible.
