The Chase Briscoe-driven No. 14 Stewart-Haas Racing squad has received harsh penalties from NASCAR.
After it was claimed that Briscoe and his crew produced and used counterfeit parts on the Next Gen vehicle, NASCAR imposed severe L3-level penalties against them. One of the biggest sanctions in NASCAR history, it is the first L3 penalty imposed in the Next Gen era.
When imposing the penalties, NASCAR highlighted the following rulebook sections: “Sections 14.1.C&F: Overall Assembled Vehicle Rules; 14.6.A: Underwing; and 14.6.3.B: Engine Panel.”
As a consequence, 120 racer and owner points as well as 25 playoff points are lost.
John Klausmeier, the crew chief, has received a penalty of $250,000 and a six-race suspension. He won’t be allowed to come back until the Pocono race weekend of July 23.
Briscoe finished the regular season in 17th place overall and was only four points short of the playoffs. He is now likely in a must-win situation after losing these points, which places him outside the top-30.
Following the Coca-Cola 600 at Charlotte Motor Speedway, a number of cars were returned to the NASCAR R&D Center, including the No. 14 vehicle.
Stewart-Haas Racing won’t file an appeal. Statement from the team: “We had a quality control lapse and a part that never should’ve been on a car going to the racetrack ended up on the No. 14 car at Charlotte. We accept NASCAR’s decision and will not appeal.”
