Not Chase Elliott’s strategy for winning the Pocono Cup race

Even though Chase Elliott was proclaimed the surprised victor of the race on Sunday at Pocono, he is clear that he would like to triumph on the racetrack and will accept any benefits due to him.

The victor of Sunday’s race at Pocono Raceway, Denny Hamlin, and the runner-up, Kyle Busch, both ended in failure in the post-race inspection and were thus disqualified, according to NASCAR, which made the announcement hours later. This helped Elliott, who had finished in third position, win.

As a consequence of Joe Gibbs Racing’s decision not to contest the fine, the revised results are now considered official.

Elliott claimed that when the decision was taken, he and his father, Hall of Famer Bill Elliott, were on a plane headed home, and they didn’t find out until they had arrived in Georgia.

“I was just surprised by that. It’s something I don’t ever recall happening throughout the time that I’ve watched NASCAR and the Cup Series,” Elliott said. “Certainly, I’ve been part of some situations like this over my short track racing career. I know it happens.

“It’s not a complete shock in other types of racing. But on the Cup side, it’s not something we’re accustomed to seeing. I don’t think any driver wants to win that way – I certainly don’t.”

The front fascias of both JGR cars had been altered, according to NASCAR, which had an impact on aerodynamic performance.

Because the new post-race inspection regulations were enacted by NASCAR in 2019, it’s the first time a Cup Series defending champion has been disqualified. Disqualifications of race winners have occurred before in the Xfinity and Truck series.

Elliott will be given the victory, his series-leading fourth of the 2022 season, barring a change based on an appeal, despite not leading a track in the race.

Elliott explained that this is the main reason why the victory doesn’t change the reality that, based on Sunday’s on-track performance, his squad needs to perform better.

“In my personal opinion, we got beat on track and from a balance perspective with our car, it could have been better,” he said. “That’s really where my head was at when we left and that’s really where my heads at today.

“Certainly, a very unique situation. I suppose it’s a product of this car and NASCAR trying to make sure is kind of living within the guidelines they set with this thing I guess. I don’t know really know the details of what went on.”

No matter what happens, according to Elliott, he won’t be doing much enjoying by himself for his No. 9 Hendrick Motorsports team or how this victory was achieved.

“Look, I don’t know it’s a win I’m going to celebrate anyway,” he said. “For me, I don’t really feel right celebrating someone else’s misfortune, No. 1, and No. 2, it could change by Thursday or Friday or whenever.

“It’s not necessarily something I’m proud of or something I’m going to boast about throughout the course of this situation. I thought we were very fortunate to run third to be honest with you. I thought for us to get back to the top-five was really a good day.

“No race car driver wants to win that way. I crossed the line third. That’s kind of how I’m looking at it.”
