Red Bull will not assist Verstappen in paying the €50,000 fine

Max Verstappen received a huge punishment for touching Lewis Hamilton’s rear wing in qualifying, but Red Bull will not assist him pay it.

After Helmut Marko stated that Red Bull will not be assisting him, Max Verstappen will have to pay his €50,000 fine out of his own pocket.

The stewards called Verstappen on Friday night at Interlagos after an alleged breach of the FIA International Sporting Code involving parc ferme circumstances.

After qualifying, fan cam footage showed Verstappen looking at and touching title challenger Lewis Hamilton’s rear wing. Verstappen and a representative from Red Bull met with the stewards, who ultimately found him guilty of the infraction.

As a result, Verstappen was fined €50,000, and according to Marko, it appears that he will be responsible for paying it himself.

When asked if Verstappen would pay the cost out of his own pocket, Marko replied, “He has to pay it, yes.”

Verstappen’s penalty “pretty harsh”

While Red Bull may have been more ready to cover fines in the past, this is the first year that Formula One has used a cost cap, which may explain why the team is taking a different approach to unexpected costs this year.

Even though Verstappen avoided a penalty that may have hampered his World Championship bid, Marko believes the fine was not a small penalty, even though Hamilton was excluded from qualifying due to a Drag Reduction System (DRS) infringement.

Marko added: “Hamilton’s case was clear. As for Max, that was a pretty harsh penalty, even though it doesn’t mean he’s going to lose his job.”
