Sergio Perez of Red Bull feels that after spending a year learning alongside Max Verstappen, he will be a title contender in 2022.
Sergio Perez feels that his year as a top team in Formula One with Max Verstappen will prepare him for a title push in 2022.
After more than a decade in the midfield, the Mexican driver joined Red Bull in 2021 and has failed to match Verstappen’s pace and form.
Perez has shown signs of adjusting to life in more competitive machinery in recent races, winning two successive podiums in Turkey and the United States.
Perez said that at a press conference on behalf of his sponsors Claro and Escuderia Telmex before of his home race in Mexico, where he stated that he believes he can fight for the championship next season.
“I want to become World Champion, it is my dream,” Perez is quoted. “I want to do it especially with Red Bull, and next year I can achieve it – that is why I am here.
“The experience I have accumulated has been refreshed here. I have learned from Max, how he takes the car to the limit from the beginning to the end. I think he is the only driver today who has that ability.”
Red Bull is only 23 points behind Mercedes in the Constructors’ Championship, with Verstappen leading Lewis Hamilton by 12 points in the Drivers’ standings, thanks to Perez’s recent improvement in form.
Perez is aware that he is playing a supporting role this season and is eager to assist his teammate and team in winning both titles.
“I always look for the best for the team,” he added. “Max is fighting for the Drivers’ Championship; we have to support him. We are also fighting for the Constructors’ Championship; every point is key to achieving it.”
Perez is hoping that the stars align this weekend at the Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez, where he has a genuine chance of claiming a home victory in Mexico.
“It would be incredible, it is the least that my country deserves,” he said. “I have always had an impressive support, no matter where I am, and I have to thank it – for that I hope to win on Sunday.
“[But] it will be difficult. We are going with the strongest downforce, as we did in Monaco, because the track is very demanding due to the height, especially for the brakes and the engine cooling, which is key, it will be a very tough circuit.”
