Following a collision on the approach to the banked last curve during Dutch Grand Prix first practice at Zandvoort, a red flag was raised.

At Turn 13, the Haas racer lost control of his VF-23 and spun out into the gravel, breaking the squad’s new front wing for the weekend.

Guenther Steiner, the team’s manager, acknowledged that the squad only had one more model of the current design, but luckily, the damage was fairly minor, affecting only the right-side endplate.

Before the incident, teammate Kevin Magnussen, who was also using Soft tyres, was in eighth place and had set the 15th-fastest time while driving on Hulkenberg’s Soft tyres.

Lewis Hamilton’s run on the Soft tyre was cut short by the red flag; the Mercedes racer turned purple in sector 1 just before the session was called off.

With 11 minutes left in the session, the session was restarted.
