On Saturday, the 9th and 10th rounds of the 2021 FIM Motocross World Championship get underway in Afyonkarahisar, Turkey.
Under the auspices of Turkey’s Presidency, the Bitci MXGP of Turkey and the Bitci MXGP of Afyon will be held.
The Bitci MXGP of Turkey, the first of two consecutive events, will take place on September 4-5, followed by the Bitci MXGP of Afyon on September 7-8.
Nearly 150 motocross riders from across the world are expected to compete in both Grands Prix at the Afyonkarahisar Motor Sports Center.
Irmak Yldrm, a 16-year-old Turkish racer, will be the first Turkish woman to compete in the women’s championship.
According to Mahmut Nedim Akulke, vice chief of the Turkish Motorcycling Federation (TMF), this will be “Europe’s largest sporting event and festival.”
“We are expecting at least 100,000 spectators,” Akulke said Wednesday, adding that spectators would be thrilled by the adrenaline-filled experience.
Tim Gajser, a Slovenian motocross racer who is one of the participants, is the reigning MXGP champion. Gajser previously won the titles in 2016 and 2019.
Another notable racer is Antonio Cairoli of Italy, who holds the world record with nine titles. The Turkish Grand Prix will include Gajser and Cairoli.
